About the Literacy Council of Madison County, VIRGINIA

Our History

"Today more than ever, people need to know how to read in order to get and keep jobs, to understand instructions, and to follow directions." This statement was part of the very first radio announcement in November 1985 announcing the organization of a new group of citizens in Madison County, VA called "Madison Literacy Council." (It was later incorporated in 1990 as "The Literacy Council of Madison County." In the early days of the Literacy Council, 23 volunteer reading tutors worked one on one with 12 learners.

In 1987, the Literacy Council first started providing a GED test preparation class when it partnered with the Carver Piedmont Technical Center's summer course.  In 1988, the Literacy Council began offering English as a Second Language (ESL) courses to seasonal workers in Madison and Culpeper.

In 1993, the Literacy Council had its first home through a gift from the County School Board of a modular unit behind what was once Madison Elementary School and is now the County Public School Board offices. In the early 2000s, the Literacy Council began offering technology and computer skills classes.

To this day, the Literacy Council of Madison County continues to provide free on-to-one tutoring in reading and math, GED preparation, technology skills training, and English as a Second Language classes. It is grateful for the financial support and volunteerism from the generous Madison County community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at 540.948.5514 or email info@madisonlteracy.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.

We offer a variety of courses in subjects such as reading, math, and writing. The Literacy Council also offers classes for GED® test preparation,  for English Language Learners (ELL), and using technology.

GED® stands for General Educational Development test. On graduating from high school, one receives a diploma. A diploma is a document stating you’ve completed all the required courses to graduate. Some students in high school don’t quite get there and do not graduate. In those cases, students can take a series of tests that will indicate whether or not they have a high school level of education. This is known as the GED® test.

Any adult resident of Madison County, 18 years of age or older, who is not currently enrolled in school or who has not earned a HS diploma is eligible to enroll in a GED class offered by the Literacy Council.

Learners are matched with Tutors who are experienced in teaching on the subject. You must make a commitment to the class and meet with the Tutor, one on one, for one hour per week, at the Literacy Council's office on North Main Street. Your schedule is arranged between you and the Tutor.

All classes are free and at no cost to the learner. The Literacy Council also offers vouchers to cover the cost of any required testing as well as the fee for the GED® test itself.

You can register for a course by visiting our website and selecting the class you are interested in, or by contacting us. Please complete this form to request more information.
